Poverty Alleviation Strategies

Yesterday, I got invitation from American Centre to attend lecture of Prof. Maurice Albertson of Colorado University. Professor is engaged in various poverty alleviation project. He developed one website where in you can find his contribution in India.

Many dignitaries of different NGOs were invited there. Professor's strategy is very simple:
1. Go to people and ask them what do they want to change ?
2. What are the barriers for change ?
3. How do they overcome the barrier ?
4. Design training program.
5. Train the people at the service centre.

Participants were thankful to Professor for his democratic approach in poverty alleviation but few of them were sceptical about people empowerment and they pointed out the results of women empowerment in Singur and Nandigram.

Finally, moderator asked us different strategies to alleviate the poverty.

I told them it is the earnest need of our society to stop urban mindset among the rural people through educational curriculum. If we make them creative and keep their indigenous system, possibly we can overcome poverty and we can stop migration. The later one is a major factor for poverty and social conflict in the urban areas.

After my delivery, I was highly appreciated by Environmentalist Subhash Dutta, Ex-Director of Bose Institute, Professor Engineer, and some journalists of Indian express, workers of the United Nations of India.

It is a nice experience. Just share my feeling with you.

I am thankful to Mr. Anjan Basu, the Secretary of the Step one foundation, Kolkata for his arrangement for invitation.
