WELCOME ADDRESS
WELCOME ADDRESS

It is a pleasure to welcome you all to this Reading and writing motivation workshop. It is our proud privilege to extend a warm welcome to our beloved Professor - Professor Tarun Kabiraj for inaugurating the workshop. We cordially welcome Professor Rathindranath De, The Director of SCERT, W.B., Professor Shanaz Nabi, Chairman, Urdu Committee of West Bengal, Professor Malati Ghosh,Professor & Head,Department of Psychiatry,Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education & Research. Our Head of the unit, Dr. Anjali Ghosh, now in US, and our Professor in charge, Professor Abhirup Sarkar, sent best wishes to all the participants.

Today’s program is a great leap forward for our challenges in Primary education. In assessment of effect of primary education on society, we are giving priority on two issues - literacy and dropout. It is assumed that literacy will increase economic capability or the per capita income. But this is a fallacy when we find that some states despite of high literacy suffer from poor per capita income. Despite heavy expenditure on development of school infrastructures, we can not control dropout. Our recent studies have shown no significant positive correlation between attitude towards school infrastructures and academic achievement of students in rural areas. All the issues pointed at the core problem of primary education - Reading and writing motivation. Reading and writing motivation are the processes to put more effort on reading and writing activities. This is framed with one's appraisal of relationship between reading or writing motives and the reading or writing outcomes. Our unit has conducted two projects to explore reading and writing motives and their pattern across different segments of students in primary education. Content analysis of the interview responses and literature survey helped in exploring seven reading (achievement, application, knowledge, aesthetic, affiliation, recognition and harm avoidance) and seven writing (documentation, emotional expression, creativity, affiliation, achievement , recognition and harm avoidance) motives. The motives vary with school management, culture and socio economic status.
One's effort towards reading and writing is determined by intrinsic and extrinsic motives. In our system of education, we are placing more emphasis on extrinsic motives rather intrinsic resulting non sustainable status of reading and writing motivation of students. It would be misnomer to assume that such assumption is only for the students in main stream schools. I think that this is applicable for the children with special needs and socio economically disadvantaged groups. It is my pleasure to announce that in this workshop, Professor Mallika Banerjee, Shri Prasanta Roy, Dr.Madhuchanda Kundu, Dr.Anindita Chatterjee and Dr. Rajarshi Roy will speak on needs of students with special needs. This is a very rare opportunity for us to meet those speakers and to listen their experiences in this workshop. We welcome them with our heartfelt thanks.

On this backdrop, we are organizing this workshop. We are thankful to Professor Rathindranath De, the Director of SCERT for his acceptance to give inaugural address in this workshop. Professor De will focus on " DEVELOPMENT OF SUPPLEMENTARY TEXT MATERIAL IN NATURAL SCIENCES FOR SANTHALI STUDENTS (CLASS-III)AND TO STUDY ITS EFFICACY".

Usually, parents meet the Physicians and Psychiatrists for educational complaints of their kids. Professor Malati Ghosh will share some of her observations about this burning issue.

After the inauguration, our student Ms. Shivani Santosh will administer one questionnaire about her study on attitude towards learning disabilities. Please extend your support to her.

We have two sessions. First session will be chaired by Professor Sumitra Purakayastha and Professor Snigdha Chakrabarty. The valedictor session will be addressed by Professor Swapan Kumar Roy, Deputy Director of School education (Rural Primary section). In the valedictory, certificates will be distributed. I welcome all the speakers, chair persons and the distinguished delegates to all the sessions to make this workshop fruitful. We have arranged lunch packets. Please collect it in the lunch time. Besides lunch, there will be tea and coffee breaks where in you will get chance to make more interaction.

In the folder, you will find some literatures presented by our respected speakers. Please study them thoroughly.

Now, I am requesting Professor Rathindranath De to deliver his inaugural address.
