What is Knowledge ?

Image
"Knowledge is like a river; its nature is to flow. The dharma of knowledge is to flow to all corners of the world and nourish the cultures there. We should never stem its flow and thereby turn it into a stagnant pond. It is said that knowledge is the greatest gift one can give, for knowledge is imperishable. Even if we light a thousand lamps from one flame, the lustre of the first lamp never diminishes. Similar is the greatness of knowledge. Knowledge does not diminish, no matter how much it is shared. In fact, the more you give, the more it develops and expands." -- CHANCELLOR AMMA Source: http://amrita.edu/asas/amritapuri/index.php The Amrita School of Arts & Sciences at Amritapuri Campus took its birth from Chancellor Amma's educational vision. Amma's suggestion was to prepare a generation that could successfully meet the rigorous demands of the Information Age and at the same time, be imbued with the noble ideals of selfless service and love. Movement analysis

On 26th August, I first time met Mitul, Ph.D. scholar in Psychology and his friend Roni in the workshop on dance movement therapy organized by the department of psychology, Calcutta university. I am thankful to Professor Mallika Banerjee for inviting me to the workshop. Mitul and Roni during one query explained us Laban movement analysis. The time was short to satisfy all our curiosities about the analysis. I think that one can use this method to describe and assess different postures and angles of body movement. They pointed at its usefulness in progressive dance therapy. Here is my collection: Rudolf Laban created this formula for interpreting, describing, visualising and notating all ways of movement. It is one of the most widely used tool to assess human movement analysis in dance, sports and in occupational therapy. Labanotation - also called Kinetography in Europe and South America - uses abstract symbols to define the: Direction of the movement Part of the body doing the movemen

Narahari Das

Few months back, I went to Nabaukhra village. Farmers initially protested - Sir, we will not hand over land to you. Finally, they were assured of no land transfer issue is involved in this meeting. They told me a story of Narahari Das. Narahari Das fed his two sons and their family members. Two sons were nonworking though they were competent enough to do work. When his two sons were children, he told them not to do cultivation but to study for job. Finally, they completed college education but no job. For the same, Narahari feeds them.

My friend who was working on that day

He was in that factory on that tragic day. I could not recognize him as he was appeared as 70/75 years old, looking pale, blackish, broken teeth. Finally, I heard of that horrible story. On that day, he was working in that demonic factory, Union Carbide India, Bhopal. He fled away with that gas by jumping as dead bodies were lying on the ground and on the wall. Suddenly, he was caught by some rescue team. Sorry, I can not write that horrible expression what I saw on his face.. It is unimaginable. I do not know the appropriate words to describe the incident. That day is haunting him still now. He suffered from insomnia, respiratory trouble, toothache, decaying muscular strength and visual hallucination. Suddenly, he cried, shouted. He is taking some costly life saving drugs. If he can not take it one day, he will die. His family is highly disturbed. Despite all, for the sake of almighty, he is now happy with his caring wife and children. . He owned house in Nagpur city and maintain

Sandeep is the eldest of her three siblings and attributes her success to her father employed in Morinda sub-tehsil. Citing her father as her immense source of inspiration behind her success, Sandeep, a civil engineer from Panjab Engineering College, had the sole goal of making it to the IAS. "I dedicated myself to preparing for the civil services and failure at earlier attempts made me stronger to prepare for the examinations," she says. Her dream is to work against female foeticide which is a big problem in Punjab. Meanwhile, in a congratulatory message, Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal complimented Sandeep Kaur and her family members, saying she had done the state proud by making it to the IAS despite her economically poor family background. Prof. Sultan Akthar passed away on 19th April

Image
Prof. Sultan Akthar passed away on 19th April, 2010. He was one of the legends in spreading Applied Psychology throughout India. Very few know about his affiliation with one football club in Kolkata. I have noticed his keen interest in sports specially football. Once I asked him. He smiled and told me his nostalgia about Mohomeddan sporting club of Kolkata. Once, he played in this club. Watching my avoidance to attend conferences, once he patted me and encouraged to attend all the conferences. He loved me as his own son. He was just like a father figure of IAAP. Despite his serious illness, he attended the conferences and executive meetings taking hectic pains of the rail and road journey. He was a role model of every Indian Psychologist. With regards, D.Dutta Roy

Structural Equation Model

Image
By reading several articles on web site, I am trying to explain the SEM here: ALARM Researchers should not design a complex experiment with too many variables when the knowledge of the subject matter is not well-understood. SEM is built upon a measurement model and a structural model. MEASUREMENT MODEL 1. Error reduction : Using reliability techniques like Cronbach's alpha 2. Determining latent trait : Using factor analysis 3. Predicting : Using regression techniques Source: http://www.creative-wisdom.com/teaching/WBI/SEM.shtml In the above figure, latent trait (the ellipse) has been extracted through the factor analysis of observed variables (rectangles). Observed variable is affected by errors (circles). STRUCTURAL MODEL It can be understood through input-throughput and output relationship following definite path. In other words, input structure predicted throughput and throughput predicted output. Figure source: http://www.creative-wisdom.com/teaching/WBI/SEM.shtml Source: htt

Coincidence

This happened in RKM, Rahara. Swami Punyananda maharaj, founder of RKM, Rahara and disciple of Brahamananda maharaj, disciple of Sri Ramakrishnadev suffered from Cancer. During the last moment, his student, Swami Nityanadamaharaj asked him " Swamiji, who are around you now ? " . Swamiji recalled names of all the disciples of Sri Ramakrishnadev including Sri Ramakrishnadev, Swami Vivekananda and Maa Sarada. Then he asked for water and left us forever. On that day, I was in RKM., Rahara. Same incident happened in case of Swami Vivekananda. Sister Nivedita asked same question to Swamiji and Swamiji replied the same.

Mixed feeling

I am going to miss my hand for the project. My project assistant obtained first position in the M.Phil examination of Calcutta University. I am very much proud of her success. She assisted me much in developing the dimension specific questionnaire. She co-authored in one of my articles related to suicide prevention of farmers to be published in the book. I had planned to teach her how to analyze the data. I was successful partially. This time will not come again. She will resign soon for joining M.Phil course. I am praying to almighty for her success in clinical psychology.
