validity

Definition:Validity is the strength of our conclusions, inferences or propositions. More formally, Cook and Campbell (1979) define it as the "best available approximation to the truth or falsity of a given inference, proposition or conclusion." In short, were we right? Let's look at a simple example. Say we are studying the effect of strict attendance policies on class participation. In our case, we saw that class participation did increase after the policy was established. Each type of validity would highlight a different aspect of the relationship between our treatment (strict attendance policy) and our observed outcome (increased class participation). Types of Validity: There are four types of validity commonly examined in social research. 1. Conclusion validity asks is there a relationship between the program and the observed outcome? Or, in our example, is there a connection between the attendance policy and the increased participation we saw? 2. Internal Validity as

How did I design the seminar ?

After success of my seminar on schedule design, I like to share some of my thoughts. Just after thinking of the seminar, I started reading on the topic and found few areas are highly overlooked in the PG level of psychology and education. These areas are non response and scaling dissimilarity in schedule. Next, I met Professor B.K. Sinha for his advice. He appreciated my ideas and told me that he would be present in the seminar in spirit as he would be out of station. With his blessing, I sent my request to the Director for approval. Initially, it returned and then I met our Prof-in-charge for the same. He guided me. Finally it was approved. I prepared one web site for the announcement and sent letters to the universities but I did not get enough response by this postal mail system. Finally, during long procession of CPM, I took taxi and personally met all the HOD of universities and institutes. Gradually, I got very good response from different participants. In the mean time, I searc

Schedule Design

On 8th December, I am going to organize one seminar on schedule design for psychological and educational survey researches. http://www.isical.ac.in/~psy/sem/Sem.htm The idea came to my mind during my work on social safety network program and on rural workers training impact study. In earlier case, I found that many explanatory variables were not properly accounted, no pilot testing of schedule, and the most difficult problem was scale equating. Correspondence between nominal and interval scale In the schedule, if some statements are categorical, some are in the form of interval scale. It becomes difficult to make adjustment with the scales. One possibility for determining association between nominal and interval scale is to use cross tab analysis of both categories of responses. In that case each rating category will be under the analysis. Geriatric Stress and Care Giver's role

1. Selecting Care Giver : Faulty selection of care giver sometimes invites problems in the life style of elders. Therefore, before selection of care giver, think more about: a) Do they have phone ? b) car license ? c) Living close to you house ? d) Do they have adequate eldercare experience? e) Do they speak, read and write your language at a reasonable level? f) Do they have any objection to being fingerprinted? g) Have they ever been arrested or convicted? h) Are they reliable, punctual, what duties they have performed and if there were any problems. i) By visiting the care giver's own home, get idea about level of cleanliness 2. Self-Care: With age elder people notice difficulties in self care activities. Therefore, care giver should pay attention to the several tasks - Toileting diapering, bathing , brushing and flossing teeth, eating with forks shaving, fixing hair, soaking feet, applying ointments and moisturizers, cleaning back, wax out of ears, applying make up, trimming

Career Counselling

Planning for career is not a mechanical process - just log on and start career. It is related to satisfaction and achievement. Fit between personality and the working environment provides satsifaction in career. John Holland's theory of career development suggests that people seek work environments that fit their personality. He suggests that there are 6 different personality types that are listed below. Most people have 2 or possibly 3 different types that describe them best. Types: 1. Realistic : Technically & Athletically Inclined People prefer to work with their hands and tools to build, repair, or grow things, often outdoors.Dislike educational or therapeutic activities, self-expression, working with people, and new ideas.Traits: stable, materialistic, frank, practical, self-reliant. Workshop on Application of Multivariate Statistics

Image
Correspndence analysis is my topic for the workshop on 'Application of multivariate statistics in psychology and education' . Here are few sites on this issue. Correspndence analysis is the exploratory technique of research. Exploratory Research As the term suggests, exploratory research is often conducted because a problem has not been clearly defined as yet, or its real scope is as yet unclear. It allows the researcher to familiarize him/herself with the problem or concept to be studied, and perhaps generate hypotheses (definition of hypothesis) to be tested. It is the initial research, before more conclusive research (definition of conclusive research) is undertaken. Exploratory research helps determine the best research design, data collection method and selection of subjects , and sometimes it even concludes that the problem does not exist! Another common reason for conducting exploratory research is to test concepts before they are put in the marketplace, always a very

Reading motivation and academic performance

Just finishing the manual of reading and writing motivation questionnaire, I am thinking to write a paper on reading motivation and academic performance. It is now almost complete. In another analysis, I found that reading motivation is not related to IQ. IQ was assessed by CPM Coloured Progressive Matrices Printed in several colors, the Coloured Progressive Matrices is an "easy" level test that spreads the scores of the bottom 20 percent of the general population. It may be used with young children, mentally impaired adolescents, and the elderly. The CPM includes the two easiest item sets from the Standard Progressive Matrices, plus a dozen additional items of similar difficulty. The CPM is administered individually, although most children aged 8 and older can take the test in small groups. Manual Section 2 contains summary and detailed U.S. percentile norms and data on the comparability between the Parallel and Classic versions of the test, as well as additional normative

History of Tripura

Image
Origin : The origin of the name of Tripura is still a matter of controversy among historians and researchers. According to the 'Rajmala", Tripura's celebrated court chronicle, an ancient king named 'Tripur' ruled over the territorial domain known as 'Tripura' and the name of the kingdom was derived from his name. A school of historians, however, challenge this story and identify 'Tripur' as an imaginary and ahistorical character. Many researchers explain the name 'Tripura' from its etymological origin: the word 'Tripura' is a compound of two separate words, 'Tui' (water) + 'Pra' (near) which in totality means 'near water'. The geographical location of the state with it's close proximity to the vast water resources of Eastern Bengal (present Bangladesh) coupled with the generic identity of the state's original inhabitants as 'Tipra' or 'Twipra' apparently justify this explanation of the s

Final Report of my Project

Internally/Externally funded projects A study on preferences to different reading and writing motives of tribal children in primary education of Tripura and Manipur . On the background of high dropout rate of Scheduled tribe students in primary schools and high illiteracy level among scheduled tribe population, this project investigated State and tribal community wise differences in reading and writing motive preferences in Tripura and Manipur. 559 data were collected through reading and writing motivation questionnaire (Dutta roy, 2003) from the major tribal communities living in the hill areas of two states. Results noted significant mean differences in reading and writing motive preferences by states, Sex and Grades. Significant mean differences in both dependent variables across tribal communities were noted. Results also revealed significant relationship of reading and writing motive preferences with socio economic variables and with individual characteristics. Findings will be us

The history of Indian Education

Returning from Manipur, I started to study the minute of Macaulay as I think that tribal people had own schooling system which seemed to be assumed as superstitious by then British people and introduced western education on them. I think that Macaulay's approach of education leads us to think that education is meant for job in the Government sectors rather for wholistic development. Lord Macaulay's theory

Churachandpur visit

Today (18th Match, 2006) is holi day. Here 5 days are for Holi celebration. In the early morning, I started for CCP with some Govt. officers. On the road, I saw that the younger girls made barricades here and there to collect the contributions from traffics. I find that females are involved in income generation programme on the other hand female literacy is low than male. Does it mean that people find no relation between income generation and education ? In CCP, I met the concerned officer, took lunch at his home. From him, I got following issues: 1. Introduction of new script of Manipuri language 2. Language or dialect 3. Problems of insurgency and education 4. Problems in teaching Math and Sc. subjects I handed over 114 questionnnaires to him for collection of data following specific sample plan. During return, I visited Loktak lake. BSF jawans escorted us.
