Alcoholic Anonymous

"Hi, I am alcoholic", Have we ever heard of it ? Possibly not, because alcoholic patients try to alien themselves assuming that they have committed serious offense in life. Alcoholic anonymous is a support group who takes care of alcoholics through resurrection program, and provides support to their children, wives, and parents through counselling and spiritual (not religious) principles. Yesterday, in Guwahati, by the support of Mind-India, I visited resurrection programs of AA in Bonda. There I have heard of the above statement. They do not feel shy rather accepts it and pledge to the spiritual power for arresting alcoholism through 12-point programs. Today, I am very much fortunate to attend Allatin (support group of alcoholic father's kids) and parents' group at Don Bosco school. I have learnt a lot from them. Those who are coming to Guwahati, please visit Bonda resurrection centre and meet Ms. Reina at Don Bosco school on Sunday. School is near by IITG. You can

Workshop on data analysis by SPSS

Very nice experience I get through the workshop. The workshop was held in the Indian Institute of Psychometry,Kolkata yesterday, 21.11.2008. Ms. Rama Manna convened the workshop. Approximate 30 students came from the background of Psychology and Social work. Initially, I asked their specific interests in data analysis of SPSS. Finally, I noted that they are mainly limited within the boundaries of univariate and bivariate statistics. I taught them how to understand the data properties through graphs (stem-leaf, bar diagram with NPC, and box whisker plot) and statistics (Standard error of mean, skewness, kurtosis etc.) by SPSS. They have learnt how to transfer files, how to select cases for analysis, how to control missing data in the analysis, how to prepare summary report of statistical data for PG dissertation. Finally, I taught them dendogram and principal component analysis and how to name the variables out of analysis. Besides, I have observed the followings: **The dissertation t

developing and studing creative consciousness

For last 2 days, I trained some Professors of AICTE approved colleges of different states at VGSOM, IIT., Kharagpur. There I taught practical leadership by the invitation of Prof. Biplab Kumar Dutta. During the training, I made some team building exercises using infrastructure project. Following steps were followed: 1. Developing creative consciousness by brain storming the vision statement of projects; 2. Selection of 2 vision statements on empowerment and national integration; 3. Enabling them in formulating the projects; 4. Empowering and energizing them to design 2 models based on their project plans; 5. Describing the projects; 6. Facing conflict situation; 7. Creating trust on self, task, principles and on vision 8. Finally analysis of their perception to self and to others and to the total training process. I have experienced many ups and downs in developing and managing creative consciousness. ************************************ In another session on Competency Development for

Learning barrier in classrooms

Learning barrier in classrooms RITH BASU CLASS ACT: Participants of the study on learning disorder among schoolchildren. Picture by Sanjoy Chattopadhyaya Characters like Ishan Awasthi of Taare Zameen Par are not difficult to find in city schools, a study by the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) has revealed. Over 30 per cent of the 25 Class V students who took part in the study, conducted last year in association with St Mary’s Orphanage and Day School, had some sort of learning disorder. The performances of the students in a programme called Fast ForWord were monitored over three months. “Auditory or visual disorders, caused by both hemispheres of the brain not developing simultaneously, is a common deterrent to academic proficiency. The problem of every child with this disorder may not be as acute as Ishan’s, but it comes in the way of him doing well in class,” said D. Dutta Roy of ISI’s Psychology Research Unit. He stressed the importance of detecting these problems early. “We used

Psychological stress management for Central Bureau of Investigation

Yesterday (28.4.08), I was honored by the CBI officers to give lecture on " Psychological Stress Management" Below is my speech. Definition of Stress There has been a considerable debate about definition of stress. Stress is often researched as stimulus, response and process. As stimulus, it is the environmental agent or stressor, as person, it is the non-specific response. And as process it is the cognitive appraisal system. Current discussion will give much emphasis on stress as process variable (Lazarus, 1966). There are two processes – primary and secondary. Primary process is person’s realization that something is at stake and secondary process is concerned with identification and availability of coping resources to deal with threat, harm or challenge. Therefore, stress is not as the cause rather is embedded in our cognitive appraisal system. This definition gives this notion as stress is not always unpleasant. Unpleasant depends upon one’s cognitive appraisal system.

Origin of Indian Mental health service

Dear Dr. Wade Pickren Thank you for your interest in studying the origin of mental health services of India. Sorry, I am not expert to speak about this issue as I have not done any research on this area. But based on my own experience, I am trying to give you some insight. Others can contribute more. ****** Indian mental health services are developed in Guru griha (Ashram) where in younger students learn basic principles of stress adjustment by interacting with nature. These principles are: 1. Self-awareness 2. Autonomy 3. Creativity 4. Trust 5. Self evaluation And the nature is of two types : Physical and Psychological. Physical nature refers to natural surroundings like Khiti (land), aup (water), tej (energy), marut (air) and Byom (sky). All these are unbounded, multidimensional and more complex. Therefore, in guru griha, students are learning how to unbound the self for coping. Like, physical, the psychological nature is very complex, multiaxial, and unbounded. These are: a) Kam

A research

Children who are poor in school performance often lack the cognitive abilities like listening accuracy, phonological awareness, working memory, comprehension etc. Listening accuracy is the ability to discriminate acoustic sweeps. Phonological awareness is ability to distinguish parts of speech, such as syllables and phonemes presented auditorily. Working memory implies a system for the temporary holding and manipulation of information during the performance of a range of cognitive tasks. Fast ForWord Language Gateway Edition product software of Scientific Learning Corporation aims to improve above abilities through it's web based 7 training exercises. These are Block commander (BC), Old MacDonald’s Flying Farm (OM), Phoneme Identification (PI), Phonic Match (PM), Phonic Words (PW), Language Comprehension Builder (LCB), Block Commander (BC). Aim of this study was to assess criterion related validity of the said product following request from the Scientific learning corpo

One of the earliest pioneers of a non-invasive healing therapy — vibrio acoustic therapy—Olav Skille was in Kolkata to create awareness about the treatment on Sunday. For the uninitiated, vibrio acoustics is all about treating psychological conditions with the use of music and/or sound vibrations. Skille’s approach on vibrio acoustics narrows down the approach to giving “low frequency vibrations”, music or no music. The vibrations are generated through transducers built into a bed or chair. “All you have to do is to just lie down and enjoy for 23 minutes. At the e

IAAP, 2008, 7-9 th February

Overall, the program is running well under the leadership of Dr. Jayanti Basu. In the inauguration at National Library, some speakers pointed at use of statistics in writing research papers. Simple qualitative data analysis is not sufficient as it fails to assess multivariate properties of research decisions. Dr. Madhabi Chatterjee of US presented a nice model where in we can use nested properties of psychological variables. She proposed such model during therapy or interventions. I added difference in the nested properties of pre during and post intervention periods. Those who are using cognitive behaviour therapy can use this model. Recently, I published one article on this issue but not nested properties using box-plot analysis. The reference is given below: Dutta Roy, D. (2008). Assessing Validity of Web-Based Computer Adaptive Training Modules, Journal Of The Indian Academy of Applied Psychology, Vol. 34, No.1, January, 127-136. For last few months, I am thinking to organize one

Freud and Shri Gita

Both tried to explore the roots of anxiety.Freud assumes that anxiety occurs due to repressed energies. Repressed energies are coming out in disguise to consciousness from unconsciousness. And when individual feels the actual image of repressed energies, anxiety occurs. Han's phobia is one example. To Freud, unconsciousness is reservoir of energy. In Gita, we find that consciousness is reservoir of energy. Energy comes through 'Nishkam karma'. In Mahabharata, we have seen Eklabya character who actually follows principles of nishkam karma. When man acquires knowledge and skills through nishkam karma, he becomes more confident. His self-efficacy level will be very high. Drona has understood so he exploited Eklabya. In Ramayana, I find Hanuman character as the nishkam karmi. Person who does not acquire knowledge or skills through nishkma karma, he feels feeling of insecurity, fear of failure in front of challenges. Freud highlighted testing the reality principle of Ego.
