Workers Education

Today is the Workers education day. Central Board for Workers Education (CBWE) invited me to attend their program held in Sujata Sadan, near by Hazra crossing. I was greeted by Mr.R.L. Chakraborty, Zonal Director, Mr. S.K. Roy, Regional Director of CBWE, Kolkata, Mr. Aditya Bhattacharya, Mr.P.Mondol, Mr. Chinmoy Bhattacharya, Mr.R.M.Dev and many education officers of CBWE.

CBWE was working as one of the wing of International Labour Organization (ILO). The International Labour Organization (ILO) is devoted to advancing opportunities for women and men to obtain decent and productive work in conditions of freedom, equity, security and human dignity. Its main aims are to promote rights at work, encourage decent employment opportunities, enhance social protection and strengthen dialogue in handling work-related issues.Prof. Sadhan Ghosh of JU chaired the session. Program was started with Vande Mataram. Mr. S. Chakraborty, labour commissioner highlighted some innovative schemes of West Bengal likely to be introduced soon for the welfare of workers in unorganized sectors and for the registered unemployed persons. Trade union leader of INTUC pointed at the threat of LPG (liberalization, privatization and globalization) on workers. I am grateful to Mr. S.K.Roy, Regional Director and Mr. R.L. Chakrabarty, Zonal Director of CBWE for thier kind invitation to say something in the inauguration.
I started my talk mentioning Professor Mahalanobis's ideas about perceiving all as workers. Next, I briefed two major projects (Evaluation of workers education at the Ambica Jute mill and current project on evaluation of rural workers education)
with which I am associated. I shared my ideas about importance of workers education to cope with current threat perceived by the people of India related to LPG. This education will help the company managers to change workers' threat perception about innovation. Mr. Shuvendu Chatterjee, President of Ambica Jute mill, howrah followed this policy. Before installing new machinery, the jute mill educated workers.
I could not attend full session of panel discussion. Mr. S.K. Roy arranged one Tata Sumo for my return journey.

I am grateful to Mr. S.K.Roy and his team.

I am also grateful to :
