Workshop on data analysis by SPSS

Very nice experience I get through the workshop.

The workshop was held in the Indian Institute of Psychometry,Kolkata yesterday, 21.11.2008. Ms. Rama Manna convened the workshop.

Approximate 30 students came from the background of Psychology and Social work.

Initially, I asked their specific interests in data analysis of SPSS. Finally, I noted that they are mainly limited within the boundaries of univariate and bivariate statistics.

I taught them how to understand the data properties through graphs (stem-leaf, bar diagram with NPC, and box whisker plot) and statistics (Standard error of mean, skewness, kurtosis etc.) by SPSS.

They have learnt how to transfer files, how to select cases for analysis, how to control missing data in the analysis, how to prepare summary report of statistical data for PG dissertation.

Finally, I taught them dendogram and principal component analysis and how to name the variables out of analysis.

Besides, I have observed the followings:

**The dissertation topics of psychology and MSW are same. Students of SW are trying to analyze the problem following psychological approach.

**Most of the students are not using multivariate models in dissertation. All are collecting primary data. Data size is not very large.

**There is a tendency to consider more variables in research. Students are directed by variables but research question.

**The dissertation period is 3/4 months.

Do you have similar experience ?
