NAOP, 2008 : AS I SEE IT

15.12.2008

It's a wonderful conference. Here, I find many members of this group in person. Electronic self is now converted into real self. It is excellent. We are all enjoying here, we are talking about Indianpsychologists group here and there, its significant contribution in development of psychological pursuits among the young generation. Some are searching for high surfers of this group also.

Yesterday, Inauguration was held in the senate hall of IIT. Prof Vindhya gave president torch to Next President, Prof. Arvind Sinha of IIT., Kanpur.

Today, scintific program along with poster sessions are going on. I have seen many new areas where in our young psychologists are looking into.
One symposium was held about accreditation issue on which area we have discussed in this group long back. Prof. Campbell, President of British Psychological Society and Dr. Saths Cooper focused on the European and South African system.

I am writing this letter to you as I am feeling your presence in disguise here.

Hope, you all are ok. Here weather is bit foggy in morning. The area is calm, quite and clean. Oh! Breakfast, lunch and dinner are excellent. You all are here. I can feel your Psychological presence.

Today, besides general body meeting, 2 symposiums are held before lunch. First is about Teaching Psychology. In this symposium, many things came out. However, I like to center around 3 things so that we can discuss more about them in this group. The speakers mainly gave emphasis on the contents rather pedagogy of teaching psychology. First, PG level in Psychology is more in Southern and Northern India. East and North-Eastern regions are not well developed. Though first experimental laboratory was established in the department of Psychology, Calcutta University. In North-East, state run department is in the Guwahati University only. 2nd, in curriculum, much attention was paid in the lab based experiment and Psychological testing. However, students are not well eqipped with psychometric properties of questionnaire and psychological tests. Survey methodology and field studies are not given much importance in the curriculum. 3rd, some universities include some unique papers in their course curriculum. Some of them are Aging, Self concept, Spiritual Psychology, Psychology of Religion etc. The 2nd symposium is about terrorism presented by Professor Campbell. She suggested different strategic planning in handling pre and aftermath of terrorism. In this group, few days back, Prof. Vindhya requested us not to consider victims as PTSD. She also suggested the same. She aadvised us to treat the victims from humanitarian approach rather psychopathology. After her deliberation, MOU was made between NAOP and BPS. Friends, I left conference before the afternoon session due to my preoccupation in Guwahati . So, I can not share much. Hope, other member will appraise you later.

MY SHOCK
I failed to understand lack of awareness about NAOP conference when I interacted with Psychologists engaged in different academic, action and policy researches.

The institutes who can contribute more are :

NIPCCD, OKD, MIND INDIA, NORTH EAST SOCIAL SCIENCE RESEARCH.
