WORKSHOP ON PSYCHO-SOCIAL SUPPORT FOR DISASTER SURVIVORS

All chair persons, resource persons and registered participants (except 1, can not attend because of salary payment issue) attended the workshop. Their gracious presences make our workshop success. Our research fellows and project assistants and scientists take part as rapporteurs and vote of thanks (Final schedule: http://www.isical.ac.in/ws/disaster.html"). This helps them to learn how to organize the workshop. When they will be in the different organizations, they can organize different training programs and workshops for the growth of the organization.
During welcome address as convener, I have pointed out that this workshop will explore four things: (a)disaster perspectives ;(b)Psycho-social crisis patterns;(c)Psycho-social support strategies;
(d)Assessment of trauma and psycho-social support evaluation;

Disaster perspectives: Though my intention was to limit within the boundary of natural disaster, during the discussion and giving examples, it expands to man-made disasters - gujrat,kashmir nandigram, singur issues.

Psycho-social crisis patterns: Instead of quantitative techniques, it was mainly within the boundary of qualitative discussions. Resource persons tend to show variation in the emotional reactions through different phases of crisis.One has pointed at the effect of arousal on changes in the complaints of survivors, e.g., feeling that some one has torned a child where as no child death is reported. This is a serious issue for mental health professionals, social workers and the journalists. In other words, verbatim report needs to be examined thoroughly.

Psycho-social support strategies
; This is classified into four - economic, medical, social and psychological and spiritual supports. WHO has few guidelines about support systems. Again the Govt. has some guidelines. All the issues were briefed by the resource persons. In giving support,one must be vary cautious about expected threats from the community. Therefore,one should follow the culture, life styles and should understand the basic needs of the survivors.Fulfillment of lower order needs like basic amenities for survival and psychotropic medicines are very much needed before thinking of psychological need satisfactions.
Psychological tools and techniques may be incorporated in satisfaction of lower order needs.

Assessment of trauma and psycho-social support evaluation;
One resource person has pointed out trauma index. Another one suggests picture drawing tests besides interview and observation methods.

Psychologists can conduct researches on the following areas:
1. Does prognosis depend upon interaction between disaster experiences and adaptibility ?
2. Does expectancy level vary with the exposure of infrastructures ?
3. Does this expectancy affect arousal levels ?
4. Can performing art help to overcome the crisis ?
5. Is there any differences in emotional reactions of survivors exposed to man-made and natural disasters ?

Above researches will help to develop some new methodology, psychological constructs and planning for disaster management.

Lastly, I like to qote from Sri Aurobindo:

"Pain and grief are Nature's reminder to the soul that the pleasure it enjoys is only a feeble hint of the real delight of existence"
