19.12.09

Respected Ms. R. Roy Choudhury,Managing Trustee, Ms. Nita Sethia, Associate Managing trustee, Ms Anuradha Das, distinguished personalities in the dias -Professor Nilanjana Sanyal, Professor Pushpa Mishra, Dr.Bhargava, Professor Bakshi and distinguished delegates, I am thankful to you all for giving me opportunity to inaugurate Uttaran Resource Centre under Tarun Sinha Memorial trust for promotion of mental health.

Currently, we are passing through a transition period. The transition between consciousness and no consciousness or between consciousness and faulty consciousness. A large number of people specially our younger generation, income generation groups ans seniors are the victims of the transition. They are gradually loosing psycho social immunities namely feeling of security, interpersonal trust, social support, autonomy in decision making, security feeling and feedback systems. This results high incidence in mental illness. According to a recent World bank study, mental health problems are one of the largest causes of economic loss.In US., economic cost of mental illness is $148 billion. In India, there is no such study to understand economic loss due to mental illness. But circumstantial evidences like sales of psychotropic drugs, suicide rate, criminal behaviour and social violence suggest growing loss of psycho social immunity among Indians. A large number of people specially from income generation group purchase anti-anxiety, anti-depressive drugs regularly. But most of the drugs are counterfeit. Counterfeit drug poses addictive danger to the patient. According to the WHO statistics, India accounts 35% of the counterfeit products. As a result, more number of Indians consume drugs to get relief but they do not get the desired results. On this backdrop, contribution of Tarun Sinha Memorial Trust for promotion of mental health is very significant one. Professor Tarun Sinha was eminent Psychoanalyst. It is nice to find that his disciples are involved in propagating his vision through various means. Uttaran Resource Centre is one of them. From the literature, I find that the center is equipped to promote capacity building for the corporate sectors and competency building for the people in service sectors. People in bot sectors are victims of transition. Psychological counseling will help them to awaken consciousness. Swami Vivekananda, Shri Aurobindo, Shri Maa and Rabindranath Tagore have given special emphasis on awakening consciousness.

Swamiji reminded "Uttishthita Jagrata Prapyabaran Nibodhata.
Shri Aurobindo and his disciple Shri Maa explored different layers of consciousness - outer, inner and innercore layers.

Rabindranath Tagore simplified complex models of consciousness layers and the journey of mind across the layers by eternal song - " Amar hiyar majhe lukiye chile dekhte ami pai ni tomay dekhte ami paini ".

Hope, by awakening our inner core layer of consciousness and by resolution of our conflict with unconscious pleasure seeking desires, this center will cater counseling services to large number of people in India.
With this I inaugurate the center to open.
