Movement analysis

On 26th August, I first time met Mitul, Ph.D. scholar in Psychology and his friend Roni in the workshop on dance movement therapy organized by the department of psychology, Calcutta university. I am thankful to Professor Mallika Banerjee for inviting me to the workshop.

Mitul and Roni during one query explained us Laban movement analysis. The time was short to satisfy all our curiosities about the analysis.

I think that one can use this method to describe and assess different postures and angles of body movement. They pointed at its usefulness in progressive dance therapy.

Here is my collection:

Rudolf Laban created this formula for interpreting, describing, visualising and

notating all ways of movement. It is one of the most widely used tool to assess human movement analysis in dance, sports and in occupational therapy.

Labanotation - also called Kinetography in Europe and South America - uses abstract symbols to define the:
Direction of the movement
Part of the body doing the movement
Level of the movement
Length of time it takes to do the movement
