    The Abstract

Key issue in Operation Research is optimization. Psychophysics is the way to optimize production cost, product innovation and product planning so that product can be sustainable. It is the science that investigates quantitative relationship between changes in physical events and changes in corresponding psychological events. Each product has multidimensional physical attributes like weight, height, width, depth, color, duration etc. Product designer changes them for cost optimization or creation of new market opportunities. New market opportunities are possible when changes in attributes are perceptible to the users and they are able to satisfy users’ needs. Otherwise, predictable change in consumer’s behaviour or his intention to use the product can not be understood. Psychophysics explains hit and miss responses. Perceptible change in psychological scale corresponding to the change in physical scale indicates hit and absence of perceptible change indicates miss response. In product design, OR scientists should pay attention to frequency of hit and miss responses. The hit and miss response pattern varies across three thresholds – absolute, differential and terminal. The variation can be assessed in terms of 3 experimental designs as (a) Method of minimal changes or ascending and descending orders; (b) Method of frequency : Randomization of stimulus presentation; and (c)Method of average error . Psychophysics gives guidelines to assess psychological attributes for production planning. Principal component based case study reveals relative importance of school infrastructures to the primary school children of West Bengal, India. The result suggests key areas for infrastructure planning.
