Raaj pichle janam ka (The Mystery of Past Life)

I have seen only one episode. It comes to my mind that feeling of incompleteness haunts the being for ever. Each wants to be complete being. Psychopathology comes out of incompleteness in our different layers of consciousness - outer, inner and inner core. So, it acts as the strong motivator. Incomplete feeling regulates our neuro-chemical systems adversely. Through such technique, person can overcome incomplete feeling. This does not mean that person will be totally complete. Incompleteness to complete and complete to incomplete is a recycle process that leads searching behaviour in our consciousness.

Panel engineers

Image
On 14th and 15th August, I visited one very big petroleum plant and interviewed several panel engineers in the control rooms. I noticed that several judgments of the engineers based on the panel data The panels are like: . They observe, monitor changes and take control operations. During the operations, they give priority on quality control, safety and others. Slight delay or poor calibrations can create huge loss (crore in terms of rupees) of the company. Other problems are job is monotonous and under their capacity utilization. This results high attrition rate. In other words, executive functions of working memory and attitudes play critical role in job success and company excellence. Is any body here who are doing researches on job or ability taxonomy of panel engineers ? Some survey was conducted but not related to individual or team productivity. So, the survey results are not very much conclusive.

Nice gesture of one Business School

It is a nice experience to spend some time with the President, Director,Advisor, Mentor of Jyotirmay school of business. I was invited by the Director as an expert to select faculties across different levels. The institute has high vision to develop business capability among the students. In the process of interview, it comes to my mind that the Institute gives priority on different management methodology, techniques and tools besides depth in subject oriented knowledge. Candidate of economics, computer science, statistics perform better if they will be able to relate their knowledge with problems of management. For example, one knows about oracle or C++ or SAP, he must be confident in application of those programming in business solutions like ERP. I think that this is good approach, if the students are aware of methodology, he can innovate new techniques to solve business solutions. Another area is more important. This is knowledge about full process. For example, mere awareness of ...

Safety in conveyer belt factory

Recently, I visited one conveyer belt factory by the request of HR manager in order to give suggestions on accident control. Here is my suggestion: Date of factory visit: 11th June, 2009 1. Cutter gripper: Gripper is slippery. It should be non smooth; 2. Use of cutter: Proper attention should be taken care of to handle the cutter specially during rushing from one worksite to other; Cutter should pay attention to the cutting point. 3. Uneven floor: Some alert sign like white line can be drawn on the uneven area in order to draw other’s attention specially during rushing hours; 4. Signal: Based on risk factor analysis, accident sites should be identified. Some blinking red light may be arranged at the probable accident site if there is no other possibility to remove probable cause of accident. 5. Machine height: Machine height should be higher than man’s height. If it is not possible, keep alert message there; 6. Safety notes: Safety issues related to each job of the worker should be pro...

Training on survey data analysis

Image
Indian Institute of Psychometry, Kolkata invited me to conduct summer training program on survey data analysis from 11-12, 14-17th May, 2009. I have learned many things through this training. Some of them are given below: Teaching aids: 1. One computer for each participant; 2. Each computer should be linked to the mother computer through which projection on the screen will be made; 3. Suitable statistical softwares should be in each computer; 4. Room should be air conditioned; 5. Instead of screen, it is better to use big white board on which instructor or trainee can write with marker pen and can clean with specific duster. Instructor Subject specific instructor should be there so that extracted results can be properly interpreted. Problems It is better to concentrate on data analysis problems instead of theory development. The title should be on data analysis. For example: Inter-rater agreement; Discriminant function analysis; Predicting group differences; Assessing Group differences...

Reciprocal determinism

Albert Bandura suggested that environment causes behavior, true; but behavior causes environment as well. He labeled this concept reciprocal determinism: The world and a person’s behavior cause each other. Later, he went a step further. He began to look at personality as an interaction among three “things:” the environment, behavior, and the person’s psychological processes. These psychological processes consist of our ability to entertain images in our minds, and language. At the point where he introduces imagery, in particular, he ceases to be a strict behaviorist, and begins to join the ranks of the cognitivists. In fact, he is often considered a “father” of the cognitivist movement! Ref: http://webspace.ship.edu/cgboer/bandura.html Here is one example. I get this from one of the members of Indian Psychologist group in Yahoo. She wrote: HI a new member in family but in profession 4 yrs Intially i went athrough all the things mentioned here, and it was to some extent heart sha...

Work Stress of police departments

The pressures of law enforcement put officers at risk for high blood pressure, insomnia, increased levels of destructive stress hormones, heart problems, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and suicide, University at Buffalo researchers have found through a decade of studies of police officers. UB researchers now are carrying out one of the first large-scale investigations on how the stress of police work affects an officer's physical and mental health, funded by a $1.75 million grant from the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The National Institute of Justice added $750,000 to the study to measure police officer fatigue and the impact of shift work on health and performance. John M. Violanti, Ph.D., research associate professor in UB's Department of Social and Preventive Medicine in the School of Public Health and Health Professions, is principal researcher of the study, called the Buffalo Cardio-Metabolic Occupational Police Stress (BCOPS) study....

Music therapy for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

Image
18th April, 2009 Negative intrusive thoughts One theory of OCD is fighting against negative intrusive thoughts. Today, one patient of 37 years having preference to Rabindrasangeet is asked to sing a song. She has started singing " Aloker ei jharnadharay dhuiye dao". She has said that most frequently she sings this song. After analysis of the song, it appears that patient is trying to come out from the negative intrusive thought that she is dirty. This poor self concept is conditioned with faulty superstitions maintained by her mother during her first statge of menstruation. Patient is deconditioned with the faulty reinforcements using that Rabindrasangeet. The result is very interesting. Yesterday, patinet takes more than 10 hours in toilet, today, she takes 2 and half hours. ================================================================================= 28th July, 2008 Response prevention is the best treatment of OCD to dirt. With this assumption, I have used music therap...

WORKSHOP ON PSYCHO-SOCIAL SUPPORT FOR DISASTER SURVIVORS

All chair persons, resource persons and registered participants (except 1, can not attend because of salary payment issue) attended the workshop. Their gracious presences make our workshop success. Our research fellows and project assistants and scientists take part as rapporteurs and vote of thanks (Final schedule: http://www.isical.ac.in/ws/disaster.html"). This helps them to learn how to organize the workshop. When they will be in the different organizations, they can organize different training programs and workshops for the growth of the organization. During welcome address as convener, I have pointed out that this workshop will explore four things: (a)disaster perspectives ;(b)Psycho-social crisis patterns;(c)Psycho-social support strategies; (d)Assessment of trauma and psycho-social support evaluation; Disaster perspectives : Though my intention was to limit within the boundary of natural disaster, during the discussion and giving examples, it expands to man-made disa...
